This weekend I visited the exhibit Recognize! Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture. I was struck by photography by David Scheinbaum and portraits done by Kehinde Wiley. I also had time to look at Black and White photos by Ansel Adams. I admire his ability to capture huge landscapes without making the photos look flat.

Raul Midón is a R&B Jazz musician with a pretty amazing biography. See him perform here.
On the city’s stages, he diligently honed his craft as a singer, writer and guitarist, developing a syncopated, flamenco- and jazz-infused approach to the steel-stringed acoustic. (www.raulmidon.com/)

Possibly Banksy
September 25, 2008 · 2 Comments
Killing time before class I passed graffiti that is similar to work done by the British grafitti artist Banksy. According to The New York Sun it may be to promote a new Lazarides Gallery opening tomorrow (Friday) downtown on Bowery and Houston. It is not been confirmed that Banksy is responsible for putting up this particular display. There will be a show called Outsiders NY at the Lazarides Gallery in New York City that will run through October 12, 2008. I really like the image of Obama as Superman especially as palpable fear over the Bailout increased as the Bush Administration released panic laden warnings last night. Superman as a cultural icon is characterized as the all American “Man of Tomorrow.” We could use a little hope and vision.

Ory Okolloh

Ory Okolloh, a graduate of Harvard University is a lawyer, political activist and blogger. I recommend visiting her site Kenya Pundit. Currently, she is tackling corruption as co-founder of the organizations Mzalendo and Ushahidi, separate websites that respectively track the Kenyan Members of Parliament and moniter violence and peace efforts. I admire her tenacity and sense of humor in the lecture she gave for the TED Talks Conference synthesizing her personal story with her vision for media in Africa.
I believe in the power of ideas. I believe in the power of sharing knowledge. I ask all of you when you leave here please just share and keep the ideas that you have gotten out of here going so it can make a difference. The other thing I want to urge you to do is take an interest in the individual…in the fellows and business people you have met. Especially in Africa because the individual in Africa carries a lot of people behind them._Ory Okolloh

Expect Less, Pay More?

September 12-15 there are small corner stores like this one open at four different locations in New York City. According to this article:
Target, which has had slumping sales for months as consumers have cut back on all but the essentials, is hoping that the designer rush will get its shoppers spending again. But analysts blame that high-end focus for part of its recent woes.

Could this have been averted if there were better regulations in place? I found this quote from BBC News :
“No other large firm should buy Lehman whole – its toxic real estate and securities are too difficult to value,” said Peter Morici of the business school of the University of Maryland.
Mr Greenspan said it would be “unsustainable” for the government to bail out every US bank that got itself into difficulty.
